CFI–West Rolling!
Plans Going Full Speed Ahead
by Ed Buckner
The following article is from the Secular
Humanist Bulletin, Volume 18, Number 2.
The Council for Secular Humanism has announced that the
theater that will be part of the first floor of our new building in Hollywood
will be named after Steve Allen. At a ceremony at CFI–West
in mid-March attended by Steve’s son, Bill Allen, and his widow, Jayne
Meadows, Paul Kurtz made the announcement. The crowd on hand not only got to
meet and hear from Jayne Meadows, they also got a much clearer picture of what
the first floor is going to look like.
A substantial start on the fund raising and most of the
creative and technical work has been done—now all that is needed is for people
like you to come through with significant financial commitments. When this is
finished—maybe as early as this year if the support is there—there will be a
permanent home for the Council in California, within sight of the famous
Hollywood sign and the wonderful Griffith Observatory, and across from famous
Barnsdall Park. A key feature of the park is a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed
building.
The Media Center, the most original part of this facility,
will allow for nearly instant responses, written and videotaped, right where
they are needed most, to the drumbeat of irrationality that Hollywood serves up
daily. Those who have followed this story from the beginning know that the
Center for Inquiry acquired the building last year for $1.6 million and
renovated the second floor for offices and facilities for the staff, plus a
small meeting space. CFI–West moved in fully just in the last few months.
