Carolina Humanists on Christian TV!

by Jo Ann Mooney

The incredible has happened! The Upstate South Carolina Secular Humanists (USH) took part in an abortion debate on Greenville's Christian Television station WGGS. After an earlier anti-choice program featuring a "reformed" abortion clinic guard, President Lee Deitz requested and received equal air-time to present a pro-choice view.

Joanna Thompson, of WGGS, interviewed Deitz and four other humanist supporters of abortion choice. A bible-clutching preacher was also included, jumping in with scriptural chapter and verse whenever logic threatened to get the upper hand in the discussion. Lee Deitz also explained why members of USH serve as escorts at the local abortion clinic: to protect women seeking medical services from anti-choice campaigners who would interfere with their constitutional rights.

Rejecting the constitution, Thompson said "I don't believe in any democracy if it isn't in the Bible". In conclusion she told her guests that they would go to hell if they died without believing in Jesus.
