Nigerian Humanists Defend Women

by Norm Allen, Jr.

The Nigerian Humanist Movement is striving to make humanism relevant to ordinary Africans. The group has recently started an excellent newsletter, Humanist Concern (March, 1998). The first issue takes a strong stand against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM - sometimes euphemistically called "female circumcision"). The Nigerian Humanist Movement has also produced an educational pamphlet against FGM. They are working closely with Nigeria's Association for Reproductive and Family Health (AFRH) in this long overdue campaign to stop the mutilation of women.

The movement is also seeking to form an African humanist network for African humanist groups and activists. For more information, contact: Leo Igwe, General Coordinator, Nigerian Humanist Movement, P.O. Box 25269, Mapo Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Tel./Fax (02) 810 4077.

Norm Allen, Jr. is the founder and director of African Americans for Humanism.
