Center for Inquiry Moscow Opens

by Matt Cherry

The Center for Inquiry Moscow was officially opened on October 1. To mark its launch the new Center held an international conference entitled "Science and Common Sense in Reforming Russia," from September 29 to October 4. Over 100 people attended the conference, which attracted excellent coverage in the Russian media. Paul Kurtz, Jan Eisler and Tim Madigan represented the Council for Secular Humanism at the grand opening.

The Center for Inquiry Moscow, located at Moscow State University, is jointly sponsored by the Council for Secular Humanism and the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). The Center is dedicated to promoting the causes of reason, humanism and skepticism in Russia. As well as translating existing humanist materials into Russian, and creating new material to meet Russian needs, the Russians are organizing an exchange program that will involve sending their leaders and best young students to the Center for Inquiry International in Amherst, New York. Professor Valery Kuvakin, Executive Director of the Center for Inquiry Moscow, will be a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Inquiry International during the summer of 1998.
